About this hospital

Guy's Hospital is part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, one of the biggest acute trusts in the UK. The Guy's campus sits at London Bridge, directly adjacent to The Shard, and houses the Cancer Centre at Guy's (opened 2016), the renal unit, and significant oral and maxillofacial surgery volume. Founded 1721, the hospital has always been a teaching site and is now affiliated with King's College London. Bed count across Guy's campus alone TK. Staff total and trust-wide admissions TK; Guy's and St Thomas' is one of the largest cancer providers in London.

What it's like as a student here

Guy's feels academic. You'll sit in on consultant-led clinics and MDTs where decisions get made with the radiology and pathology on-screen in the room. The oncology firms rotate you through medical oncology, clinical oncology, and the specialist tumour MDTs; you'll see breaking-bad-news consultations, clinical trial discussions, and SACT administration on the day unit. Renal attachments include dialysis unit time and transplant assessment, and the oral and maxillofacial team runs theatre lists most weekdays with complex head and neck reconstruction. Morning starts vary by firm but most medical rounds begin around 8.30am. Teaching is structured: bedside teaching, weekly grand rounds, and case-based discussions are the norm. Students who ask clear questions and show up prepared get generous feedback here. The Gordon Museum of Pathology sits on the King's Guy's Campus (access is restricted to medical, dental, and healthcare students and staff, so ask your firm lead if you can be signed in).

Notable specialties

  • Oncology: one of London's largest cancer services; tumour-specific MDTs run weekly.
  • Renal medicine: haemodialysis and PD units on-site; transplant assessment pathway active.
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery: free flap reconstruction, head and neck cancer MDT, orthognathic work.
  • Cardiology: shared with St Thomas' across the trust; PCI, structural heart, and electrophysiology.
  • Dermatology: high-volume general dermatology and skin cancer clinics.
  • Haematology: lymphoma, myeloma, and acute leukaemia service with transplant pathway.
  • Endocrinology: thyroid cancer and pituitary MDT.
  • General internal medicine: acute medical take, strong teaching culture.

Location & vibe

London Bridge is central and busy. Borough Market is five minutes away for lunch (expensive but worth it). The Shard looms directly overhead. Students rarely live in Zone 1 on a budget; most commute in from Southwark, Bermondsey, or across the river in Waterloo. The Northern, Jubilee, and Thameslink lines all run through London Bridge, which makes the commute from almost anywhere in London manageable. The area is lively from morning until late evening.

Who does well here

Students who want a research-adjacent teaching hospital with strong specialty exposure and an academic teaching culture. If you're interested in oncology, renal medicine, or complex head and neck surgery, Guy's is where you want to be.

One honest caveat

Guy's is not a standalone acute hospital: much of acute medicine and A&E is at St Thomas' across the river, so check your firm's site before you book travel.
